Guild Wars 2

So I had the pleasure of playing the open beta a few weekends ago (pre-order bonus) and I cannot stop thinking about the total awesomeness that I experienced...

This game is something that finally brings everything that a MMO should be to the table. For me there will be next to zero MMO's currently on the market that will stand up to what this game brings.

It would take me hours to go through everything and days to try explain how brilliant the combat is and weeks to paint a picture of the world itself.

There will be no grinding, there will be no stupid "kill 10 homeless kids" quests. The emphasis on teamwork, when needed, and the amazing solo play is something to behold.

Gone are the days of Tanks, Healers and DPS (FINALLY!!) Each class is self sufficient, leaving more time for tactics and pure PWNAGE!

And if all that wasn't enough enter WvW (world versus world) where you and the people on your world (realm) battle other worlds to the death in MASSIVE battles. There are siege engines, castles, huge friggin crossbow things. Its tactical, its HUGE and its the most fun I have ever had online.... EVER!

I will not head off into the WoW killer cliche, but I am confident enough that this game is what I want to be playing that after 4 years of WoW I have cancelled my subscription.. I await this games release with more excitement than when I heard they were making a star wars mmo (to bad it flopped so epic!)

Are there other people in Namibia that will be playing this game... Can we setup a dedicated thread so we can all get on the same realm and maybe start a guild? This game is free to play, all you do is purchase it and that's that!

Let me me know what you guys out there think!

Re: Guild Wars 2

I played Guild Wars 1 when with the trial phase and I was amazed by it as well. My problem is that I don't have much time to play unlike the fat little US kiddies that wear diapers and play all day and get uber gear and become imba while eating fries and icecream.

Come 3 weeks, I might join you in your quest.Did you have a good connection to the guildwar servers ? Any lag , server restarts ? How long did their maintenance take ? How are quests compared to other mmorpg's ? Are doing quests instanced or do 50 people grind on teh same boss or mobs ?

healadon
healadon's picture
Re: Guild Wars 2

hey man,

The connection was awesome on my ADSL line, extremely low ping and very stable. There were no server restarts while I played. It difficult to say how long maintenance is because it was only a open beta, but after the weekend it took 3 days and there was a 800mb patch or user related fixes that was installed, not to say the game was broken, cause as far as i saw it was finished, polished and running like a dream. So that 800mb was pure new things and extras. They took what people were saying and used as much as possible to make a great game.

I think it best you grab a hour at lunctime and visit the site and forums and take a read.. You will get more info out of that than me and you can really get a feel for the game and take a look at the classes as well. It will be an hour well spent.

One cool thing is that this game is not deadly gear dependant. While gear will give you some preferable stats, its all really based on movement, ability and your choice of abilities and combos. Its insane. Really. So if you are a weekend warrior its fine, cause you will not fall behind and get ass slammed by leet kids. Cause it will not exist in Guild Wars 2. Obviously a person who is level 5 will get the doom fist from someone who is level 80.. but two level 80's against each other will be down to skill!

Re: Guild Wars 2

The part I enjoyed most during my time with Guild Wars 2 was how it encourages players to actually work together, even outside of typical party mechanics. There is no monster tagging where the first person to attack a NPC gets all the loot and experience for killing it, a feature most MMOs adhere to. Instead, everyone who helped defeat a monster gets rewarded with experience and the chance for items, which encourages players to help each other even if you're not formally grouped with them. This also ties into questing. Rather than specific goals like "Bring me 10 wolf pelts," the world questing in Guild Wars 2 has broader area based goals. You might be tasked with assisting a local farmer, but you can help her out in a number of different ways. Defeating bandits, recovering supplies or simply tracking down her lost livestock are all actions that will contribute towards completing the quest. This means that you can spend more time playing and completing your goals with the help of others and less time waiting for that last wolf to respawn.

Another method for breaking up the norm for MMO questing is the inclusion of events. The game world is peppered with these mini-quests that often tie-in with the larger area based quests. You might be clearing out spiders from an orchard when a particularly large one spawns or perhaps you'll be asked to escort a soldier past waves of centaur to raid an armory in the middle of a larger conflict. These events will dynamically scale with the number of players in the area so they always have just the right feeling of difficulty regardless if 5 or 25 people are there. This is actually where the developers plan to extend a portion of their ongoing content, and the specifics of where and when won't always be announced. So down the line as you are rolling alternate characters you might be completing the same quests, but you'll still be discovering new things to see and do along the way.

Now, the following question will be pointless BUT, will this game be available to buy at NANODOG ?!

[EDIT]

Dude seriously, stop talking about it so perfectly :S you're tempting me to drive home and play this game  Just checked out the site, looks great - already have my eyes on a profession

Ex-Wow player here. Really good review. Just a couple of questions. Do you get less exp/gold if a player helps you kill something? What do you mean, every class is self-sufficient? I mean, in wow, you can solo with any character, so whats the deal here?

Im not dissing the game, just wanted to know.

Re: Guild Wars 2

@ Healadon : You mentioned guild wars being free ? You said people only need to buy the game. You played weeks ago - so what's your opinion regarding "pay to win" and "free to play" ? Are players able to buy advantages with real money or does everyone have a REAL chance of WINNING ?

healadon

Re: Guild Wars 2

@PerCo
Equal loot drops for all people. No one has an advantage when it comes to drops.
You gain Karma points used to purchase gear.. so when something does fall off a big boss everyone gets say.. a few pieces of gear upgrades and random crap plus your karma points. Which is not split between people.. its the same amount you would have gotten even if you solo killed the thing.

@cyberion1985
Guild wars 2 is NOT P2W... There is nothing you can buy that will give you even 0.00000001% advantage over another player. Nada. ;)

Re: Guild Wars 2

@PerCo

Have not heard of any trial periods available, but I am pretty sure they will announce something to that effect. With games of this scope there usually are trials.

Pretty sure there will be another 1 or 2 open beta weekends soon, so download the client and create and account, you might get an invite.. ;)

@foamy

yeah that's me :D

I really would like to get a nice big community hitting this game hard. If we can get enough peeps interested in it we are sure to have a awesome time. And the WvW battles are going to be insane with people you know on vent or something! :D

Re: Guild Wars 2

Epic. You have played the game, choose a nice server (hopefully pvp :D?) and everything so once the game is released we all know where to go and what guild to join :) (Don't know anything about GW2, hopefully you can switch between server like in GW1). We can get a nice following going and if we get enough people we can get a forum/site running. You still in contact with Horst and Andreas? Maybe they will join as well

Re: Guild Wars 2

Awesome.

I will be creating a Namibian Guild on the Desolation EU server. So this is my open invite to all who will be playing GW2 to come join me.

Not sure wtf to call the guild... So please feel free to drop some names :)

@foamy
You are able to switch between realms as far as I understand... but during the last beta event Desolation took 3/3 wins in WvW... Trust me its the place to be :)
The only person I am still in contact with from the old days is Jens... everyone else just stopped.. :) will totally email everyone I know and get the ball rolling. You should do the same..

:D it's not that I have anything against them.. I think it was WoW that killed off ym taste for "mage" like classes. Re: Guild Wars 2

Best thing about GW2 (unless they changed it) is the no subscription, which I'm gonna be loving. This still like that healadon ?

@Yohan: If guild wars 2 is not subscription based then we can do that + DotA. Might have more PvP appeal than WoW, even if me you and PerCo play 3v3 arena, WvW combat in GW2 sounds too awesome.

Re: Guild Wars 2

@foamy

GW2 is subscription free.. You just buy the game and that's that. No monthly fees at all. That's what make it so damn appealing, that a game of this quality and pure awesomeness and do away with the aging subscription model. They will make their money the same way they did with GW1 and that will be buy releasing loads of expansions.

And I just heard they have hit over 1 Million pre-orders... So it's all systems go! :D

Re: Guild Wars 2

Yeah, good point. You can expect the usual problems like the lag you will get when there are 100's of people at a starting area... But this is normal and nothing really can be done about it. things will even out as you go in your own direction..

There is no launch date set yet, but there are rumors of one more BETA weekend and then they will be ready.. So it is not that far away at all.

I payed like 500 something bucks for it online... Seems to be about the average price these days :D

Hi there all,

I took part in the guild wars 2 stress test last night from 6pm -10pm (which was then extended to 11pm as a bonus)

For the duration of the stress test there was :

- NO LAG
- NO ERROR 34
- NO ERRORS AT ALL! :)
- NO LOGIN PROBLEMS
- NO DISCONNECTING!

It was pure bliss! Had the time of my life... Not sure on how many people took part last night, as it was mainly for Europe players, but I am sure it as a whole load.

So far so good, this is set to be the launch of the year.. glitch free!

All characters and guild will be deleted before the release on the 28th, so I will be creating the Namibian Guild on the 28th, will then post server and guild name here... Then we can try get everyone playing the game in Nam to play together...

Its going to be epic!

Re: Guild Wars 2

It is very cool having a "all Namibian" guild. I remember back in the days we had one, (for WoW) was awesome, used to meet up on some weekends to braai and talk about Wow and tactics and stuff. Great social events and just jamming some wicked PvP!

Ahhhh the good times!

And the WvW games in GW2 are definitely going to take some strategy planning if we want to make a name for ourselves as a guild...

Re: Guild Wars 2

@foamy

You need to get used to the fact that there are no set tank, dps or healer roles.. Every character has 1 healing spell. Which is used to keep yourself alive while pwning.
Its awesome. The holy trinity is no longer! :D

@slickpiotr
If you head over to the guild wars site you can pay and pre order the game, you get an immediate digital download. And you will be eligible to play the last open beta weekend this month on the 20th - 22nd. It also has a in game ring or something.

Re: Guild Wars 2

Gona miss my resto druid as well.. but trust me the way boss fights work in GW2 is just so much more epic... If you guys take part in the open beta weekend you will see, there is a boss fight about 15min after you start... its awesome. Every member of the group attacking has to check his/her life... do major dps.... rez fallen comrades (yes.. everyone has the ability to rez someone who has fallen) and to had out buffs and make sure target objectives are met.

A lot of the spells/abilities work with each other... say for instance if a elementalist lays down a AOE firewall a ranged class can shoot through the firewall and his/her projectiles will pick up extra fire damage...

trust me... pre order the game and play it on the 20th - 22nd! :D

Healadon, if you downloaded the game, does it download updates and how many ? How big is the actual download for the client ? If you are unable to download the full game, do they have an option to send the game per DHL ? And of cause ; If you play the beta weekend, do they or will they reset when the game is released ?

healadon

Re: Guild Wars 2

I am not sure on the size I can have a check at home and post it around 5ish.. it's pretty damn big... it downloads everything u need to play. Patches included. Let me have a look when I get home from work and then get back to you on the size.

I am willing to give my copy of the client out no worries, we can setup a date and time and everyone can get it from me. I have the latest updated version.

All you will need to do is to create a account, purchase it and get your serial key.

I am not sure they deal with sending the hard copys out. I think part of the deal is get the pre-order digital version and get beta access, in game items, and a 3 day head start before release. Game releases on August 28th, pre-order will be playing on August 25th.

Everything is going to be reset after the last beta weekend. Total fresh start for everyone. Beta weekends are cool, I suggest you do as I did and play to level 12/13 with each of the classes, get a feel for them and the starting areas, get used to the combat mechanics and play some Pvp and WvW.. no point in hitting the quest trail cause you will have to do it all over on release. at least then you will have a good idea of what class you will be playing and what race...

Sounds great  . Is there anything about the game you dislike ? Anything that annoys you. If you die for example, how is the respawn process ? Will you respawn in the nearest town or even further away from where you were killed ? Do you loose XP on death or items ? Are there differences between dying/respawning in a PvP zone or a PvE zone ? How do you travel around in the game, as in portals - Can you port to any explored space or do you have waypoints you travel to or can you only travel from town to town ? Last but not least how are the game mechanics in relation to quest award, XP gain and monster kill. Specificailly , if you finish a quest , was the quest interesting and a bit hard to complete - is there a epic storyline to follow for the characters ?

[EDIT]
I mainly played tank and healer classes. I very much disliked solo and lone-ranger classes. the greatest problem for me in most mmorpgs was the lag, because you can't play team if you DC or lag... Most of the time , I played with 2 or 3 characters at the same time (multi-boxing) and spend most my time grinding on hords and hords of mobs. Then I spend a considerable amount of time on farming items and selling them on AH. I also participated in global events, like ranking battles and boss raids but since most mmorpgs I played were mostly FTP-PTW , boss raids turned into drama and ks and only something for the top guilds and the strongest players. There was a huge imbaness in PVP where the people that bought ingame items and those that played for free. People killed PVP and killed the game.

Re: Guild Wars 2

I will try to answer as many of your questions as I can. Seeing as I have only been in two of the previous beta's there is still a lot that I don't know and things that I am not sure about. The forums on the site are a great source of knowledge directly from the communnity and can help to make things a bit more clear to you.

I won't say there is anything that I downright dislike about the game, but there were a few aspects of it that I had to get used to the first time I played. But after giving it a chance I realized that said aspects were as a matter of fact total improvements to what I was used to. And its only cause there is a set format that MMo's these days drive into your skull that it was weird to me.

For instance. There is no "auto target" system... meaning... You can jump, dodge and move out of the way of incomming attacks. Where as in WoW once you attacked a creature you were stuck to it (often taking damage from it while not even being close to it) in GW2 you can totally get the hell out of the way of a swing from a enemy blade.

On the other hand this also brings about a whole new concept while fighting... You can also totally MISS!!

Tap any of the direction keys twice (w,a,s,d) and you will dodge in that direction with a nice roll. Its a great idea and to make it a little more challenging this "dodging" works off a resource like stamina. You have 3 bars of it, each dodge costs 1 bar, and it regens slowly. I am sure you will get stats/potions or whatever to speed up this resource regen eventually.

Dying in the game is pretty ok, you can respawn at the nearest waypoint. Or you can be ressed by a passing player. If you die in pvp, pve and WvW you get a debuff (can't remember the name, so we will call it a death point hehehe) each time you die you get 1 death point added to you, this means the more death points you have the less health you are respawned with (death points stack!). This debuff lasts a little while and if you die in quick succession and get say 5 death points you will be in a whole world of hurt.. as you will revive with almost no life.

Your gear also takes damage everytime you die.

Travelling in the game was something that I also disliked a little (as we are very spoilt in other mmos's with crazy mounts) GW2 will NOT allow you to fly. The developers say this takes away from the scope of things... and i do agree. Walking around in one of the major cities literally has you saying "holy shit" every 2 mins because of the size and sheer scope of it. Flying around you will lose this perspective and everything will just seem small. This game plays alot on things being as big as they are supposed to be! :D

I am not even sure if there will be ground mounts.... It's something i didnt even think about because right from the get-go you are able to be where you have to be without the need for a mount. Not like in wow where you had to run for weeks (before your first ground mount) to get to the next quest line!!

The system of way points is awesome... from anywhere you are in the world you can just open your map and click on a way point and there you go.. It costs like 9 copper or some shit each time which is nothing really...

XP is gained from questing, killing, completing dungeons, dailies, general tasks (I went from lvl2 to lvl 4 just by helping a farmer feed his cows) pvp, WvW and crafting! You can level up from 1 to 80 with just crafting!

This means you can bugger off into the woods and collect ore and up your crafting for blacksmith. And you gain XP! Basically what ever you feel like doing will give you XP. You can just be free in your own little world!

Loot works in a whole new way. And this is primarlity because of the fight mechanics (no set dps, tank and healer roles) I will try and explain as best I can. Its really not complicated, its just hard to put in words...

Gw2 is NOT a gear dependent game. There will be the obvious bonuses from gear that you will get while questing but its not a game changer. There will be no uber geared dude in PvP pwning a lesser gear dude. Its all about your ability to use your class correctly and their set abilities. If a warrior equips a Bow, a set of skills will open on the task bar that he will unlock as he uses his bow. change to a sword in one hand and a axe in the other hand, and a new set of skills opens. change to a sword and a trinket, and a new set opens, change to two axes, and a new set opens... get my point :D

There are loads of combination weapons you can use and change during battle to best suit the current opposition.

As an example I had a necromancer who was trained in dual wielding axes, for those close encounters... And would then swap back to the main combo I used which was a scepter with a warhorn offhand.

Questing was awesome, but I really enjoyed the world events much more... the general rewards were better and you really felt like you accomplished something after it was done and you were successful... and you really feel like poo if you fail and you will.... cause boss fights are super hard. But so so so much fun!

There is a main storyline to follow which is EPIC and different for each profession/class..

cyberion1985
cyberion1985's picture
Re: Guild Wars 2

Many thanks for that detailed response.

You can level up from 1 to 80 with just crafting!LOL

I can remember my mmorg that I played for some time. I went into a PvP zone but you could only be there when you are a specific level. There was the 1-15 zone, obviously people only joined the zone when they were 15. Then you get the 30 zone and the 1-60 zone where again people only came there when they were lvl 60. As a level 60 you have more stats points and additional unique lvl 60 skills and weapons.

So the question that came to mind now is the level - if you do a WvW , don't you have to be a specific level to take part ? Are there specific zones for different level ranges ? Would it be wise to make characters at those levels or simply grind to level 80 and then to "start playing" endgame ? (Is there such a thing as endgame) ?

Re: Guild Wars 2

A little more on WvW.

"We wanted to make WvW fun and easy to get into, so there’s no level grinding required—you can just hop into the battle using your normal PvE character, regardless of what level you are.

When fighting in the Mists, you’ll be using your regular PvE character and the gear you’ve acquired in your adventures through Tyria. In the Mists, players all fight at the same level. Any character below level 80 will be adjusted so they are roughly equivalent in power to what they would be at level 80. This makes combat among characters of any level not only possible, but actually fun!

Even better, you continue to gain experience and new items while playing in the Mists. Players you kill will drop loot for you just like slain monsters in PvE. The player that was killed doesn’t lose any of their own equipment—that would suck—so you’ll never need to worry about losing your favorite rare weapon if you are defeated in WvW. Even better, any gear that is dropped for you will be level appropriate. You can improve your character’s weapons and armor as you fight!

Character level adjustments have a limit, however. The level-adjustment system won’t let a level 1 character go head-to-head against a level 80 character with much chance of victory—a level 80 character is still going to have more bonuses on their gear and access to a full complement of utility and elite skills that players just don’t have at lower levels. This is not to say that the high-level character will one-shot the level 1 player, but they will have a clear advantage.

So what’s a low-level character to do? Anybody can man a siege weapon, help repair walls, or go hunt down enemy dolyaks, so even new characters can still be useful in the Mists—as long as they pick their fights wisely. Fights are rarely one-on-one affairs, so if you’re just starting out, you’d be wise to find some teammates to fight alongside you as there definitely is strength in numbers."

END GAME.
There are NO end game raids, that doesn't exist in GW2. There is a end of the main character story line but that's it. There are just 100's of high level bosses, dungeons and world events.

Re: Guild Wars 2

A few more points that might be on interest....

Orb of Power
Each Borderlands map has a single Orb of Power which is defended by a powerful NPC named the Keeper of the Orb. If the keeper is defeated, the orb can be taken to a keep and placed on an Altar of Power, which will result in bonuses for the entire server in WvW. Once the orb is taken, it must be placed on an altar of power within 15 minutes or it will reset.

Enemy players
Killing an enemy player in WvW will result in experience and loot drops. Loot is randomly generated; the defeated player does not actually lose anything through being defeated. Aside from these individual rewards, there is no particular benefit to fighting other players. As a result, combat will usually occur when attacking or defending an objective.

The names of players from other worlds are not shown. Instead, they appear as " Invader" or " Defender". For instance, a player from the Darkhaven world inside a different world's land would be called simply "Darkhaven Invader".

Siege weapons
Siege weapons are environmental weapons that can be built to accomplish a particular purpose. For instance, arrow carts and cannons are very effective against groups of enemies, while ballistae and trebuchets are ideal for breaking down doors and walls.

To create a siege weapon, a player uses a blueprint, purchased from a siegemaster or obtained from loot, to create a build site. Construction is performed by spending supply at that site and once construction is completed, the siege weapon can be used.

The following siege weapons are available:

Arrow cart: fires a volley of arrows, dealing significant damage to players but weak against structures.
Ballista: fires a giant bolt, dealing heavy damage to structures and players in its path.
Catapult: great for dealing with walls, gates, and clustered enemies.
Flame Ram: rams gates at close range, dealing heavy damage to it.
Siege golem: slow and short ranged but capable of dealing significant damage.
Trebuchet: long-ranged rock thrower capable of dealing significant damage to players and structures alike.

In addition, defensive siege weapons can be constructed on walls to help defend objectives against assaults. These siege weapons do not require blueprints, but do require some supply to build. Defensive siege weapons are:

Cannons
Mortars
Boiling pots of oil

With the exception of the siege golem, all siege weapons are stationary and cannot be moved.

Rewards
Window of WvW bonuses and score.
Power of the Mists is awarded to players in PvE and WvW based on the war score of their home world. It include bonuses to health, gathering and crafting among others. A player will receive the bonuses of their home world even when guesting on other worlds.

Mini-dungeons
Players can take their WvW battle underground in a “mini dungeon” beneath the central map. This subterranean level is full of tricks and traps that can be used against enemy players, and is home to the aptly named Dark Room.

Matching of worlds
Worlds in WvW are matched up based on their ranking using a modified Glicko rating, so that high-ranked worlds will battle other high-ranked worlds, and low-ranked worlds will battle other low-ranked worlds. This ensures that every world has a fair chance of winning matches despite differing levels of player participation or skill.

Re: Guild Wars 2

ok this all sounds too awesome... the excitement can't be topped ! I will just have to play this game ! How long would it take to get from level 1 to 80 ? And hopefully there will not be level gabs, like for example no quests from lvl 50 - 56 ... and repetitive quests - like help the farmer cross the road (doing that quest 20x gets boring after doing it once )

Re: Guild Wars 2

it is going to be very awesome.. you really do need to experience it to really get the full effect of its awesomeness..

Not sure how long the 1-80 process will be, it depends on you entirely. If you are gona quest it might take a tad longer than if you were gona do it via crafting or PvP..

With the random events and world quests and stuff you will never have to do any quest twice.. ever.
